What is Istikhara?
Istikhara is the beautiful Sunnah of asking Allah for goodness (khair) before any important decision in life. Our beloved Prophet ﷺ taught us a special two-rak'ah salah and dua so that we never make a major choice without first seeking the help of our Creator. Istikhara is not magic — it is a humble request to the All-Knowing, All-Wise Allah to guide your heart, open the right doors and close the wrong ones.
When Should You Make Istikhara?
Whenever you have to take a decision that will affect your dunya or akhirah:
- Choosing a husband or wife (rishta, love marriage, second marriage)
- Starting a job, leaving a job or changing career
- Beginning a business or signing a partnership
- Buying or selling property and other major investments
- Travelling abroad, migration and visa decisions
- Medical decisions, treatment and surgery options
- Family disputes, settlements and reconciliations
